Megalo Papigo is perhaps the most famous of the 46 Zagorochoria. It is located in the prefecture of Ioannina, on the slopes of Tymfi, at an altitude of 960 meters.
It is certainly the tourist capital of Zagori, as in Megalo Papigo, with 280 permanent residents, there are 55 tourism-related businesses (guesthouses, taverns, cafes, outdoor activities, etc.). In total, there are over 700 beds in all kinds of accommodation in Megalo Papigo.
It is a declared traditional settlement with stone-built houses, one of the most characteristic examples of Zagorian architecture.
Like the wider area of Zagori, it experienced great development in the Ottoman period, and more specifically from the 15th to the 17th century, due to the privileges granted to it.
Today it lives mainly from tourism. It attracts tourists 12 months a year, not always at sustainable levels. For tourists, it is the base for touring the region. They can dive in the nearby swimming pools (natural pools in the Rogovo stream), follow the trail leading to the notorious Drakolimni, walk in the nearby Vikos gorge, and go rafting and other activities in Voidomatis. Or just get immersed in the view of the Towers of Astraka, the steep peaks of Tymfi, which cast their shadows on Papigo, reminding of a cinematic scene
